What Can We Do when Our Data Gets Out?

Yesterday, all of the tech publications were warning of another major data breach.  Another popular Facebook App exposed users' personal data, and this time, over 120 million users were possibly affected.    Who was careless with our data this time? Nametests.com, a site Techlaurels warned users about over a year ago.

In a nutshell, Nametests had this hole where if you knew the right JavaScript commands, you could potentially access any users' personal information.  A website could exploit this, or any individual who knew how to grab and use a "token."  The "good guy" who discovered this used the flaw to set up a data mining program and subsequently reported the bug to Facebook. The security hole was supposedly closed.

And of course Nametests wanted that hole closed as soon as it was discovered. Who is going to buy a candy bar if there is a bowl sitting next to the register that says "Yours for the taking."  Or to borrow from an old cliche, if you're in the business of selling cows, you don't want to be giving the milk away for free.

For the last week or so, Facebook and its data-sharing tendencies have been in the news.  "Delete Facebook" campaigns are proliferating the Web, and a lot of folks are wondering what really happened and how worried they need to be.  Today, we're going to look at the Facebook controversy, discuss how users were actually complicit in this breech, and talk a little about the ramifications. We'll also look at how to protect yourself in the future, as well as explain how you can download a copy of your Facebook profile so you can understand what the data miners really obtained.

What Happened with Facebook and My Personal Information?

In a nutshell, an individual created a rogue quiz app.  This particular quiz was a Personality Test, and of course, it encouraged you to both share your results and to invite friends to take the quiz.  Almost immediately after launching, over 10,000 Facebook users had taken the test.  After it went viral, over 270,000 people downloaded the quiz app, and even more used the web-based version.  Folks ignored the app's permission requirements, and willingly gave the app permission to access their information, as well as that of their friends.  Soon, the quiz had harvested the Facebook data of over half a million users.  Many of these folks had never accessed the quiz personally, but rather had their data mined through a "friend" giving the app permission to basically take what it wanted.

The Quiz Creator then sold all the information he had collected to a data mining firm. That firm repackaged the data and sold it to Cambridge Analytics.  Cambridge Analytics then used the data to profile people politically, and to "reach out" to folks in order to manipulate their thoughts during the last election.

This is the end of our series on Internet Quiz Services.  Folks love to take quizzes, and they can be great traffic-drivers. But many quiz hosting services do nothing but mine data, and their sketchy terms tell you little about how they will use the data they are mining. 

This series began by discussing the negatives of many quiz sites.  Then it went on to identify two quiz hosts who do not mine data: QuizRevolution and Polldaddy.  Earlier posts reviewed quiz creating and hosting services at these sites. Today, we end the series by looking at Polls and Surveys. Both Polldaddy and QuizRevolution offer poll and survey hosting, as well as tests.

Quizzes vs Tests vs Polls vs Surveys

At QuizRevolution, you can create surveys and quizzes. At Polldaddy, you can create quizzes, tests, surveys, and polls.  What are the differences between these?  Well, for all intents and purposes, a quiz and a test are the same thing.  Both offer a series of questions with right or wrong answers. Both are scored upon completion. A test or quiz usually assesses knowledge of a particular subject area.  On the Internet, however, quizzes tend to refer to silly, fun lists of questions, and they may or may not actually reflect knowledge or mastery.  Internet quizzes are more often centered around personality traits.  They may not be based on any sound theory at all.  On the Internet, tests tend to be more serious and more learning-focused.

A poll is a single question that asks one's opinion on something. It's generally multiple choice.  A survey, by contrast,  allows you to ask multiple questions across a wider range of question types.  It may include "scaled" questions, open-ended questions, and/or multiple choice. It may also collect demographic and/or personal information, such as name, sex, address, etc.  But there are no right or wrong answers, and no passing scores with a survey or poll.

If you have been following this blog, you will have read our series on the Dangers of Internet Quizzes.  The first articles discussed the dangers of taking these types of quizzes, as well as the privacy ramifications.  We then moved on to safe quiz sites, and the differences between the good hosts and the data miners.  Techlaurels promised to review two quiz hosts that were good for both bloggers and quiz takers.  Our last posts discussed one of these hosts: QuizRevolution.  Today, we are going to review the second site: Polldaddy.

Usually, Friday posts are Quick Tips.  Today's post is really a Quick Tips post, wrapped up in a Quiz.

This post was originally going to be "A List of Useful Keyboard Shortcuts." However, if you've been following this blog, you'll know we are in the middle of a series on Internet Quizzes and the related privacy issues.  As a part of this series, we have been exploring GOOD quiz sites, both from a user standpoint and from a marketing standpoint.

So today's list of keyboard shortcuts is presented in a quiz format. It's a fill-in -the-blank type quiz, with the answers presented after each question.There are 20 different Keyboard Shortcuts in the quiz.

Instead of writing a boring list of useful keyboard shortcuts, I dumped the list into a quiz.  Hope you enjoy playing and learning at the same time!

This is the third part in a series on what you also give up when you take an Internet Quiz.  Part 1 focused on General Dangers.  Part Two reviewed the terms of use for one popular Internet Quiz site. Today, we're going to look at nametests.com.  I think about 75% of the quiz results that come across my own Facebook timeline come from nametests.com.  I think few folks visit the sire directly.  Most click-through friends' shared results to take the same quiz.  While there, they often fall into a click-hole, taking other quizzes suggested at the end of the one they just took. How many readers have taken a test at nametests?  How many of you have actually looked at their terms of services?

Are Facebook Quizzes Really Harmless?

People LOVE taking Social Media Quizzes.  Sites like Buzzfeed have entire sections devoted to quizzes.  Facebook timelines are filled with results shared from various quiz-hosting sites.  Quizzes and tests can be great traffic drivers, and from a marketing standpoint, they can be very beneficial to your site.  But what about from a user standpoint?  Are there any dangers of taking these internet tests and sharing the results?  The answer, unfortunately, is neither yes nor no.  There can be great dangers in taking these internet quizzes, or they may be completely harmless.  If you scrutinize before you click, you can easily learn the difference.

What Are Some of the Dangers of Taking a Quiz?

The dangers fall into several categories.  Again, a quiz site may be harmless, and none of these dangers may apply.  Or it may be a complete and total scam site, out to cause you harm.  Most quiz sites fall somewhere between these two extremes. The trick, as with any internet activity, is to be savvy.  You need to arm yourself with the knowledge to evaluate the risks of each individual quiz. This list is by no means inclusive.  It only describes SOME of the dangers you may encounter.
