Keyboard Shortcuts Presented in Quiz Format,
And More on QuizRevolution as a Resource
Usually, Friday posts are Quick Tips. Today's post is really a Quick Tips post, wrapped up in a Quiz.
This post was originally going to be "A List of Useful Keyboard Shortcuts." However, if you've been following this blog, you'll know we are in the middle of a series on Internet Quizzes and the related privacy issues. As a part of this series, we have been exploring GOOD quiz sites, both from a user standpoint and from a marketing standpoint.
So today's list of keyboard shortcuts is presented in a quiz format. It's a fill-in -the-blank type quiz, with the answers presented after each question. There are 20 different Keyboard Shortcuts in the quiz.
Instead of writing a boring list of useful keyboard shortcuts, I dumped the list into a quiz. Hope you enjoy playing and learning at the same time!
More information about QuizRevolution.com, the site on which this quiz is hosted, follows the quiz. If you are interested in blogging, marketing, and those types of aspects, keep reading after the quiz. If you're just interested in keyboard shortcuts, take our quiz and learn while you play.

QuizRevolution and "Fill in the Blank" Type Tests
I basically took a post I had prepared about "Useful Keyboard Shortcuts" and converted it into a quiz. I did so to test the "Fill in the Blank" type quiz at Quiz Revolution. I really liked the interface. A fill-in-the-blank type quiz allows you to provide several correct answers, so you can account for the variation in words with which someone might answer a question. For example, CTRL+D deletes selected items in most Windows applications. However, in most web browsers, CTRL+D adds a page to favorites/bookmarks. If you take the above quiz, you'll see that either "Bookmark" OR "Delete" are acceptable answers for CTRL+D.
Of course, with any computerized fill-in-the-blank type quiz, a drawback is trying to anticipate the different words folks might answer with. It is a "match the characters" type thing, rather than any AI "interpreting" answers against a key.
It is easy to add questions and answers. You can also add images to questions, if you want. But perhaps the strongest feature is the ability to add follow-up text after a question is answered. This is demonstrated in the "Shortcuts" quiz above. You can also add a "Cover Page" and an "End Page," features we utilized in both of the quizzes we've hosted on this blog so far. You can see these features in action when you take the quiz.
This quiz is set to present the questions in "random order." This means if one retakes the test, the questions SHOULD present themselves differently than they did the 1st time. This can be beneficial, as it prevents one from "memorizing" an answer key.
I really like the test-making interface. It is very easy to use. However, I found it "glitchy" when it came to editing questions. If you change your mind about anything, delete the question and re-add it. I found that editing led to multiple/repeated answers, half answers, and just general wonkiness.
And again, QuizRevolution is safe. They are NOT harvesting user data. But that does not mean they are ideal.
So far, we've demoed a multiple choice and a fill-in-the-blank type quiz on the blog. Next, we will demo a survey. I know these quizzes have been "taken" more than once. Yet if you visit the quiz page at QuizRevolution, the quiz counter remains at zero. QuizRevolution promises you stats, yet these appear only to "work" on paid plans. This is something to keep in mind should you be looking to collect data, rather than to just drive traffic. (If this changes as more folks find the quiz, I will update this post.)
Because of this, I've chosen to use the "Show Final Results When Finished" feature with this quiz. This SHOULD give a tally of how folks answered each question on the "end" page.. (We did not "turn on" this feature in the previous quiz.) This may be a "work around" to the not collecting stats issue. We will see as folks take THIS quiz.
Update: I have found that SOME statistics are collected and can be viewed. You need to go to your dashboard, select a quiz, select edit, then click on the statistics tab. Click on a question to expand it. However, these statistics seemed inconsistent. There really was no way to accurately tell how many folks had taken the quiz, and the counter on the page is still failing to increment. The fill-in-the-blank quiz seems to be collecting zero statistics, not even the number of takers. It may be statistics are NOT shown on the edit tab when you have selected to have them show t the end of a test. I will continue to update this post if I find anything changes.
