What is URL Redirection?

Ever hear the term "URL Redirection" and wonder what it means? Quite simply, it means a user can type one domain into a web browser, and the DNS server will fetch a different page or domain.

This blog uses URL redirection. It was originally set up under a free account. I had registered the domain name "techlaurels.com," and I decided to use it. I logged into my domain name registrar, and I set up URL redirection. Now, if you type "www.techlaurels.com" into your browser address bar, your browser will serve up http://techlaurels.blogspot.com/ . Try it out for yourself. This is URL redirection in action. 

These days, URL redirection s usually offered as a free perq with registration. In other words, you should be able to redirect your domain name for no additional cost.

How is this useful? Well for one, it allows you to use free hosting services without tying your domain to them permanently. Some day, I may want to develop a full-fledged website under the Techlaurels.com domain name, without killing this blog. I can simply re-point the DNS.

Redirection is also useful for pointing several domain names to one website. I could purchase tech-laurels.com, techlaurels.net, and tech-laurels.net, and redirect all 4 domain names to point to one website. That way, I only have to set up and pay for hosting a single domain name.

Having several keyword loaded domain names can be good for SEO, as well as for usability if your domain is hard to spell. Redirection also offers flexibility, especially if you are in the habit of parking domains. It can also help to reduce your overall website costs.

URL Redirection can be handy, for personal sites, business sites, hobby sites, and recreational sites alike.  Everyone should consider using it to enhance their own electronic presences.
